CamSoda is a live cam site where signup and public rooms are free, and tokens pay for the extras. You make an account, you walk into a room, and you spend money only when you want something the room doesn't give away.

I read CamSoda's own FAQ, its menu and its token page so you don't have to. Where I couldn't confirm something, I say so out loud. Here's the quick version before the long one.

What Is CamSoda?

CamSoda launched in 2014. Wikipedia says Daron Lundeen started it, and that it was the first site to offer 360-degree VR live streams. VR cams still feel like a party trick to plenty of people. CamSoda showed up to that party early.

It isn't the only VR name anymore. Stripchat has VR too, so the early start is history more than a moat. It still shows CamSoda was willing to try a new format before most people cared.

How Does CamSoda Work?

You get an icon on your home screen, and it opens CamSoda. That's the whole trick.

I can't tell you whether a separate app exists in any app store. The FAQ describes only the home-screen install, so I'm writing only that.

Search for the app and you'll see app store listings mixed in with the real answer. Treat any listing that camsoda.com doesn't send you to as a lookalike. Never type card details into anything that isn't CamSoda's own site.

Is CamSoda Safe and Legit?

CamSoda has been around since 2014, per Wikipedia. That makes it a real company with a long record, not a pop-up. It also says signup needs no credit card. That's what I can verify.

Here's what I can't. I haven't audited its privacy policy, its billing terms or how it handles disputes. Age verification is its own topic, and I haven't read CamSoda's explanation of it.

Legit means the company is real. Safe depends on what you do with it. A few habits cover most of the risk:

• Pay only inside CamSoda's own cashier.

And four things to watch:

• The 50-token pack is a trap. At $0.140 a token, it costs 74% more per token than the 3,100 pack.

• The best rate needs a big wallet. The top pack is $249.99.

• More menu means more ways to spend. Decide your limit before you open a private show.

• I haven't confirmed the model split. So I won't quote one.

My verdict: CamSoda suits you if you want free signup and prices you can read. Skip the smallest pack, set a budget, and you'll be fine.

Tokens in One Paragraph

CamSoda's help page lists packs from 50 tokens for $6.99 ($0.140 each) up to 3,100 tokens for $249.99 ($0.0806 each). Same tokens, fatter markup on the small packs. For a feel of the gap, spend 100 tokens at the top-pack rate and it costs about $8.06. Spend them at the 50-pack rate and it costs $14.00. Same 100 tokens. Nobody tells you that at the cashier.
